Ceramic coating

A ceramic coating protects your paint against UV, bird droppings, tree sap, insect residues and chemical contaminants. The coating creates a hydrophobic effect, so water and dirt bond less easily — your car stays clean longer after each wash.

What a ceramic coating is

Unlike a wax or sealant, a ceramic coating forms a chemical bond with your clear coat. The result is a transparent, glass-like layer a few micrometres thick that adds a few hard properties: surface hardness (often quoted on the 9H scale), chemical resistance and a strong hydrophobic effect that beads water off in droplets.

We work with Gyeon coatings — a Korean manufacturer known in the detailing world for durable, no-nonsense formulas.

What it does

• Protects against contamination — bird droppings, tree sap, fuel splatter and bug residue bond less and are easier to remove.
• Slows UV fade — especially on red and black paint that would otherwise dull over time.
• Makes washing faster — dirt rinses off rather than sticking. A hand wash takes noticeably less time after coating.
• Adds visual depth — a smoother top layer reflects light more evenly, so colour reads deeper.

What it doesn’t do

Be realistic: a coating isn’t an invincible shield. Stone chips, deep scratches or a shopping trolley in a parking garage will still leave their mark. What the coating does is push the first line of defence further out — your paint sits one layer deeper.

Preparation is everything

A coating is permanently visible — literally. Anything trapped under the coating (swirls, holograms, holsters, water spots) stays there forever. That’s why preparation in our shop is at least as important as the application itself:

1. Thorough hand wash and decontamination (clay bar, iron remover).
2. Polishing — two-step or three-step depending on condition.
3. IPA wipe to strip all polish residue.
4. Coating applied in thin, even layers, panel by panel.
5. Curing in our workshop, sheltered from dust and rain.

Plan for one and a half to two days total — preparation, coating, then curing before you drive off.

Single-layer or multi-layer

• Single-layer system — typically 2-3 years of protection with proper care. Suits daily drivers and lease cars.
• Multi-layer system — a base coat plus a top coat (and optionally a booster) extends the lifespan to 5+ years and increases hardness and gloss further.

Maintenance

A coating thrives on the right care. Our recommendations:

• hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo (no aggressive detergents);
• no carwashes — brushes wear coatings down fast;
• an annual booster to keep hydrophobicity at peak;
• clean off bird droppings and tree sap as soon as you notice them.
